Social Rituals: Chinese New Year (2)

Around three days after we arrived, the Chinese New year began. It is also known as the Spring Festival. It is celebrated at the turn of the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar. It is one of several Lunar New Years in Asia. The first day of the New Year begin on the new moon between January 21 and February 20. This year, the first day of the Lunar New Year was on the 16 of February. Each year celebrate a Chinese zodiac sign: 2018 is the year of the Dog. That way, we could see dog statues everywhere in the streets.

In real life, it means that every shop and restaurants are closing for almost during 5 days. Also, every Taiwanese are going in temples to pray for luck and fortune for the year to come. I decided to do the same as the tradition was suggesting. I found one of the biggest and most famous temple in Taipei: Lungshan Temple of Manka.

When I arrived, it was hard to come in because of the crowd. Everyone had incense sticks and was praying. I was impressed by the fact that we could see people from all ages and social classes.
